Healing through Sound

The healing power of sound.

Sound has been used throughout human history to heal the body, balance the mind, to soothe and stabilise the emotions and to awaken consciousness and elevate the spirit. Through all religions and races, sound has been an essential component in healing practises, shamanic work, rites of passage, ceremony and celebration and in everyday life, from singing to ease a long work day and lullabies to comfort and settle our children to sleep.

Science is catching up with what the mystics of old knew instinctively, everything vibrates, everything generates sound, from the planets in the cosmos to the subatomic level of our body’s cells, we are sound! We are constantly surrounded and influenced by sound- both harmonious and disharmonious, much of which is beyond our limited human hearing range.

The ancients believed that sound is the prime creative force in the universe, that it can structure and change physical matter, science is now showing us this is true. Think of Hans Jennys cymatics, showing the Om, when toned, creates the beautiful structure of the Sri Yantra, a mandala meditated on for millennia by Buddhist monks and doctor Emoto’s work with chanted prayer over bodies of water, changing the pattern inherent in the water molecules from incoherent and polluted to coherent and harmonious crystalline forms, like snowflakes. This becomes more relevant when we remember that our physical bodies are hugely made up of water!

Sound healing works with a simple range of instruments, such as, shamanic drums, gongs, Tibetan and crystal singing bowls, or frame drums, tuning forks and a selection of shakers and rattles and sometimes the voice.

Shamanic drumming connects our heart beat to the rhythmic power of the Earth. It is like the heartbeat in a mother’s womb, and is used to aid in achieving the altered state in consciousness.

The simple sounds guide the mind and body down into a deep and nurturing state of rest and relaxation, dropping the brain waves from busy and active beta state to the meditative and healing pulses of the alpha/theta zone. This is where the bodies self-healing is optimised with the release of its own restorative and balancing chemistry, inflammation is reduced and tensions on every level are unwound. The cells and tissues of the body are effectively and gently massaged by the sound waves, assisting detoxification and release of stress and trauma. The vibrations also flow through and influence our energy bodies, helping with the release and resolution of injuries and issues on all levels of the being, supporting us coming into peace, harmony, alignment and communion with our most authentic selves.

“One who desires true union of yoga should leave all thinking behind and concentrate with single-pointed attention on the Nada” – Hatha Yoga Pradipika.

What is sound healing?
Sound healing is the process in which a practitioner uses aspects of music to improve the health of their receiver. Sound healing offers to bring us into a deep state of relaxation as the vibrations of the sounds entrain the brain to move into the Alpha / Theta brainwave frequencies that induce’s deep meditative and peaceful states. There are five main frequency brain waves: Beta, Alpha, Theta, Delta, and Gamma.

Alpha is a state of heightened creativity and relaxation, where effortless awareness, imagination, visualization, learning and concentration are all heightened. Alpha brainwaves are associated with releasing stress and rapid anxious thoughts, balanced mood and stable emotions, Dropping down into the Alpha frequency bring’s one into a state of calm and relaxation. The Alpha state helps to produce endorphins and boosts the immune system.

Theta is a state of very deep relaxation where we can experience deeper levels of meditation, insight and memory. It is the space we experience during REM Sleep. Theta helps us let go of painful emotions as it opens us up to emotional healing. The brain waves are slowed down at a frequency of 4-7 cycles per second. It is here in ‘theta’ we are open to the deepest levels of physical, emotional and energetic healing.

Tibetan Singing Bowls have been used for centuries for healing and meditation purposes, the pure sounds create a pulsating tone, that feels good and helps you to relax. The more you listen the deeper you relax, as your brainwaves begin to bring you down into the Alpha / Theta state, in this state deeper intelligence, intuition, creativity and self-healing mechanisms of the body are activated. We are not only listening to, we also feel the sounds as much as we take it in with our ears.

The principle of sound healing
The basic principle of sound healing is the concept of resonance (the vibratory frequency of an object.) The entire Universe is in a state of vibration. Everything is in a perpetual state of motion and vibration, every atom, every molecule, all of the stars and galaxies. This includes human beings. Every organ, cell, bone, tissue and liquid of the body and the electromagnetic fields which surround the body has a vibratory frequency. Sound can redress imbalances on every level of physiologic functioning and can play a positive role in the treatment of virtually any medical disorder. Stress, trauma, illness whether physical, mental, emotional, spiritual part of the body that isn’t vibrating at its optimum frequency will benefit from sound healing.  What is held in the body can safely be released and brought back into balance.
Sound healing in relation to yoga

Sound healing in yoga is known as the path of “Nada Yoga”, Nada Yoga means “union through sound.” The original texts on Nada Yoga (the Nada Bindu Upanishad) date back between 500 and 200 BC. These texts focused mostly on the sound “Om”. Nada yoga sounds composed of all elements (space, air, fire, water and earth) are brought together to create a unique experience for the client.

Nada Yoga is a powerful tool to find peace and clarity. These practices include chanting mantras, chanting sounds and sound meditations. “Sound meditation”, also known as “sound healing” or “sound baths” is the practice of listening to ancient sounds and deep tones to ease into profound states of meditation, restoration and healing.

Yoga nada is a practice of deep listening, we may not “hear” all the frequencies that surround us but we are affected by all of them. “Anahata” means the sound of space, yoga nada is to get to this point where you can actually be in touch with the sound of silence. Anahata is the sound where all frequencies arise and dissolve into. When you tune into the subtle vibrations around you, you become more receptive and open to the different tones and layers of information that before you may have missed.

    Schumann resonance frequency

The Earth is a living being. The natural heart beat of the earth has been pulsating at 7.83 Hz for thousands of years, with shallow spikes of 7.83Hz depending on how many storms are on the planet at the time. It is a extremely low frequency (ELF) of the Earth’s magnetic field. It’s the global electromagnetic resonances, generated and excited by lightning discharges in the cavity formed by the Earth’s surface and the ionosphere.

This is the frequency, 7.83 Hz the Ancient Indian Rishis called the frequency of OM. The Earth’s frequency is said to be “in tune” with the human brain’s alpha and theta states.

Connecting with the Earth’s resonance is essential. That’s why when we spend time in nature away from all electronic devices, such as wifi, mobile technology and other man made energies, we find ourselves feeling grounded with a sense of calm and peace. Our own vibration is influenced by our surroundings. Techniques such as, grounding, or connecting to the Earth, is one of the most powerful and oldest practices we can use to remain centered in life.

Humans are creating an environment that is literally out of tune with nature, everything alive responds to the most subtle changes in magnetic and electromagnetic fields surrounding us. Is this why highly charged social, economic, and personal environments cause us to experienced stress, emotional distress and migraine headaches?

Likewise, can human consciousness impact the magnetic field of the earth and create disturbances in it? Being out of balance with nature and forcing our own will certainly has a negative effect on our own personal life, so why not the collective. As all living beings are connected, and everything has its own energetic vibration. Are we collectively damaging or healing the web of life?

Human beings are beginning to wake up and re-discovering the secrets of the resonance and its impact on their health. When people’s vibrations aren’t aligned with their environment, they are living unnatural lives and are suffering. Connecting with natures healing frequencies can bring balance, relaxation and wholeness back to your body, mind and spirit.

The Earth’s frequency is speeding up?

Since the Schumann frequency are said to be “in tune” with the human brain’s alpha and theta states. Recently the Schumann Resonance vibration has reached frequencies of 36+ Hz, this acceleration may be why it often feels like time has sped up and events and changes in our life are happening more rapidly. Not only that, the increase to 36+ Hz is associated with a stressed nervous system, or highly alert and focused ‘beta brainwaves’ ranging from 14Hz – 30Hz rather than the more relaxed, but alert alpha 8Hz – 14Hz and the meditative, drowsiness theta 4Hz – 8 Hz states .

These spikes of Earth’s magnetic frequencies can jostle any blockages in the human energetic field, higher frequencies are a good thing for clearing of the auric field of the human, as long as it is done in moderation. but can also cause the physical body to stay at a low or stagnant ELF (extremely low frequency).

Increases in frequency create increases in consciousness.

Whatever is happening, it’s clear that life is shifting. It is so important to be aware and responsible for our own energetic vibration. What we put into our bodies, the impressions we absorb in our life and the energy we send out to the world will not only have a direct effect on our own lives, but also our family and community. We are all working through our own karma as we raise the collective consciousness to a higher level of awareness.

This acceleration of the Earths vibration may make you feel more tired, exhausted, irritable, dizzy, depressed. As we work through and release the energetic blocks of the past, such as, childhood trauma, denseness, negative condition and dis-ease, we will allow the physical body to vibrate harmoniously with the planetary frequency and to have a healthy energy flow within the body which prevents aging and disease, as you begin to work through and raise your own frequencies to adjust.

Gamma frequency 27Hz and above, is the fastest of brain waves (high frequency). This is the state of mental awakening, or consciousness that exists above the everyday waking state of beta brainwaves. To be more “in tune” with the gamma brain wave frequencies that we are more frequently experiencing, we have to evolve and adjust our own energetic frequency to get comfortable with Earth’s new energy.

This is reaching much higher levels, which can be more than twice as high as high beta brain waves. This process maybe turbulent as we are purging in order to be able to releasing karmic patterning. Keep in mind, the Gramma frequency is about our higher consciousness, and it vibrates the energy of love, compassion and kindness.  This shift is all about the evolution of human consciousness and our planet.  This is all part of our own unique healing journey toward awakening to our spiritual path.

Remember if you need to sleep or are ill and need to heal, our brain waves require a lower frequency. Each brain wave frequency has it’s benefits.
