What is acupuncture?
It is part of a health care system, known as traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Originating in China, with a history of development dating back thousands of years, it is still continually evolving today. It involves the insertion of fine sterile needles into specific locations of the body to relieve pain and treat many different ailments. It is a safe and drug free therapy.
According to traditional Chinese medicine philosophy, our health is dependant on a vital energy know as Qi moving in a balanced way through a series of channels below the skin. If this becomes blocked or stuck for many reasons, such as injury, emotional issues, stress or infection, pain and illness can result. Acupuncture frees up this blocked energy, allowing the body to work more efficiently and trigger the body’s natural healing response.
What happens in a session?
Our therapists will take a detailed case history asking many questions, some of which may seem related to your current condition and some that might not be so obvious, but are relevant to a traditional Chinese medicine diagnosis. By looking at your symptoms and how they relate to each other and by using various diagnostic and observational techniques, including examining your pulse and tongue, they formulate a treatment plan tailored to your individual needs. They will then insert very fine, acupuncture needles into specific points of the body, which will be left for a period of time.
All needles are sterile, single use and disposable. You may notice a significant change just after one session, but a course of 4 -10 treatments is recommended, especially if the condition has been present for a long time.

Benefits of acupuncture
Acupuncture relieves pain and it can be used to prevent disease or strengthen the constitution, or can be used if a person is feeling unwell, without being “ill” in the western sense. It can also be used alongside conventional medicine in the treatment of both acute and chronic illness. Acupuncture moves beyond just focusing on the presenting symptoms, it identifies the factors that contribute to disease and balances your system. Acupuncture recognises that physical, mental and emotional health are interrelated and treats the person as a whole.
A growing body of evidence-based clinical research shows that traditional acupuncture safely treats a wide range of common health problems. Here is just small sample of why people commonly receive acupuncture:
- Gynecological problems
- Skin Conditions
- Muscular, skeletal and digestive problems
The World Health Organisation reconigises the effectiveness and therapeutic benefits of acupuncture in treating over 120 health complaints.
Acupuncture treatments are available at Wicklow Yoga by appointment only.

I have a generalization anxiety disorder for a decade and I am on medication to treat it but 90% of the time medication doesn’t stop the palpitations/ tightness in chest and my mind racing. I attended Dave for acupuncture and after a few sessions my Anxiety went. I would highly recommend Dave to anyone who is suffering from any condition.
David and Anna gave great pregnancy support to us when we were pregnant with our twins. It helped Maria feel more confident and at one stage to turn the babies in the right direction for delivery. Delivery was a dream just 3 hours in the labour ward! Thanks guys for your expertise and help.
I had severe back pain and sciatica which left my right foot weak and floppy like a “flipper” on the end of my leg. The pain at times was excruciating and after a number of sessions of physiotherapy I decided to try acupuncture. Dave had sorted out a very painful tennis elbow a couple of years previously so I decided to try Dan-tien again. I am absolutely amazed at how fast I got results with abdominal acupuncture after one session the “flipper” is already working like a foot again and the strength is returning to it. I am looking forward to getting the full use of my right leg back with the help of Dave’s incredible abdominal acupuncture.
