Shiatsu

Shiatsu is a holistic therapy originating from Japan and influenced by Chinese and Western knowledge. It is based on similar principles to acupuncture, but the practitioner uses their hands instead of needles.  Shiatsu acts to re-balance the body’s energy to promote well being, support good health and prevent illness.

Why receive a shiatsu?

Shiatsu can be used to prevent and relieve many conditions. These are some of the common reasons why people receive shiatsu:

  • Problems with muscles and joints
  • Postural problems
  • back, neck and shoulder pain, sciatica
  • For relaxation and relief of tension and stress
  • To relieve anxiety/depression/insomnia
  • Low energy/fatigue
  • Problems with digestive system
  • Breathing problems
  • Headaches/migraines

But you don’t have to be ill to benefit from shiatsu, many people choose it because they enjoy it and to help them to stay well. Shiatsu is as relaxing as a massage and can be enjoyed by everyone. Anna has been treating clients for years and would be happy to speak with you if you would like to know more.

What happens in a shiatsu session?

The practitioner will take a lifestyle and medical history before making an evaluation, based on the reasons for coming and the symptoms you have they will then tailor the treatment accordingly, taking into account their own observations and a touch diagnosis. You will be given a full body treatment, through loose comfortable clothing, usually lying on a padded mat on the floor (for maximum comfort a body cushion may also be used). The shiatsu practitioner will use a variety of techniques. These include applying pressure along energy lines and points using palms, thumbs, elbows and sometimes feet. Stretches, rotation of the limbs and mobilisation of the joints may also be part of the treatment. A shiatsu can range from being very gentle (using holding techniques to work on areas of weakness) to being more vigorous and dynamic .

What research says about shiatsu?

An independently assessed research project commissioned by the European Shiatsu Federation, recently concluded that shiatsu is likely to leave you feeling calmer and more relaxed and it can also improve a variety of symptoms. Users felt “physically more mobile”, “more energized”, “more balanced” or “more able to cope with things.” Shiatsu users symptoms were significantly reduced and maintained throughout the study.
